You all know how much Sarah Noel and I love a good contest! Recently, after much brainstorming for a new series, I was struck with an idea – why not incorporate the multitude of talented writers that participate in the Musings blog into a piece somehow? Better yet, why not make it a contest (since we love to see people win stuff!)? So here it is — a haiku writing contest!

What, exactly, is haiku? It’s a Japanese form of poetry that has 17 “moras” or syllables. In English, we separate these syllables into three lines of 5, 7, 5 syllables, respectively. They typically contain a seasonal reference as well. Check out the image above, that’s a haiku I wrote about the contest.

What does Japanese poetry have to do with photography, you ask? During one of my favorite photography classes, we were given a haiku and asked to interpret it using our cameras. I loved the assignment and would love to do it again! Sure, I could Google ‘summer haiku’ and come up with hundreds, I’m sure. But that’s no fun and there would be no prizes!

If any of you have experienced the insane winter weather (clear through spring) like we did here in Flagstaff, you can empathize with how ready for summer I am. I’d like to see 70 degree days for a consecutive week. Is that too much to ask? Let’s drown our winter blues with some summery creativity!

Top five picks – The photographs and haiku will be displayed at Il Posto starting June 21st (the first day of summer)! Il Posto is an Italian restaurant in Metro Denver where I currently have my photography on display. It’s time for a new series to hang and this project will be it! you know I love a good party. and I especially love a party for a great cause.

in 1996, flagstaff arts & leadership academy became one of flagstaff’s first (I think it was the first, actually) charter schools, focusing on music, performing and visual arts. what, a school that is fine with me playing clarinet for half the day? genius!

I was a senior that year and didn’t want to change schools, and I was jealous of my younger sister that she got to attend such an amazing school. her experience was nothing less than top-notch and I was grateful that she got such a great education in high school. back then, they were meeting in portable trailers on the museum of northern arizona campus, hoping for new grounds by the time she graduated in 2000.

it’s been 14 years and fala still needs their new campus! a very generous donor has offered the school $20,000 if they can raise a match from the community. enter the gala! come on out on friday, march 26th at 7 pm to celebrate and help raise money for this very worthy cause! it will be a fun evening of delicious food, drink, entertainment, and a fabulous silent and live auction items.

tickets are just $20 and your ticket purchase includes plentiful hors d’oeuvres and one complimentary drink. the event will be held at:

after nearly 140 inches of snowfall this year in flagstaff, I am more than ready for spring! granted, I realize that we are due at least two more storms before the grass greens up, but I am going to enjoy this marvelous weather while it lasts!

I realize that it’s been several weeks since I’ve posted anything, but many factors have contributed to me being MIA recently – a bunch of family stuff that came up suddenly, and then a major technology fail. My archaic computer took a dump and one can only spend so much time on a BlackBerry.

I’m really excited to get back to blogging – I’ve had a couple of sessions that I am eager to post and share with you, plus some announcements for spring mini sessions and travel dates.

One of the things that I have enjoyed so much about spending the past 3/4 year immersed in my photography career are all the amazing people that I have met.

First, I love my clients. They are all awesome people to know and many of them have become friends. I love keeping up with them and knowing who has just gotten a new pet, whose kid is now driving, and even shooting the senior portraits of a girl I first met when she was five. This business is really about celebrating life’s milestones, whatever they may be, and the unique joy to be a part of that can only be described to someone who has actually experienced it also.

While I am technically self-employed and don’t have “colleagues,” per se, I really enjoy getting to know my fellow photographers and friends in the business. They are all so incredibly supportive and embrace one another. We share knowledge and information with each other like good friends share recipes. Sure, we are all competing for our share of the market, but for the first time in my life, I don’t feel like I am selling in a cutthroat environment (not to say that there aren’t some devious folks in this industry, I have just had the good fortune of not meeting them yet). It’s more like a big family of people who all share the same passion and desire to succeed, and by working as a team, we all win. It’s awesome.

Sharing life with those around you in such an amazingly creative way is a blessing that I never imagined receiving when I chose this career path.

In the past few years, I have become a part of a community that I love so much because they are all about giving back. All of the hours I have spent in the past two years have been met with a mix of both praise and criticism. Truly though, I have always had a giving heart and I decided that I need to do more.

This year, I decided that I wanted to help out as many charities as I could, some big, some small, all in need of support. So I have decided to donate 10% of my profits each month to give to a specific charity. This month: The Make-a-Wish Foundation.

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation^® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish^® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Greicius realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Since its humble beginnings, the organization has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, reaching more than 174,000 children around the world.

Although it has become one of the world’s most well-known charities, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has maintained the grassroots fulfillment of its mission.

A network of nearly 25,000 volunteers enable the Make-A-Wish Foundation to serve children with life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers serve as wish granters, fundraisers, special events assistants and in numerous other capacities.

The first year I lived in Denver was the first time that I had been involved with the Make-a-Wish foundation, and it was so inspiring to me that there are a group of people out there that simply want to bring magic into a child’s life at a time that doesn’t feel very magical. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
